For just one week in your life, keep a paper log of where you spend your cash. Account for every penny to see where you spend money. A few dollars here, a few dollars there really add up and it’s hard to track. This is why it’s better to use a credit card if you can control your spending. If you have difficulty controlling spending with a credit card use a debit card so that you cannot spend more than you have in your account, or use cash and only carry small amounts at a time to limit your access. Figure 7 shows an example of a cash log assuming you net $12.50 an hour. Use one for just a week to see what you spend. At the end of the week divide the total by your net hourly rate to see how long you had to work to earn that money. In the example, you would’ve worked 184 minutes, or just over three hours, to do so.
